The page you are reading is part of a draft (v2.0) of the "No bullshit guide to math and physics."

The text has since gone through many edits and is now available in print and electronic format. The current edition of the book is v4.0, which is a substantial improvement in terms of content and language (I hired a professional editor) from the draft version.

I'm leaving the old wiki content up for the time being, but I highly engourage you to check out the finished book. You can check out an extended preview here (PDF, 106 pages, 5MB).

From page 807 of Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.

Let's face it, Randy, we've all known guys like Ares. The
pattern of human behavior that caused the internal mental
representation known as Ares to appear in the minds of the
ancient Greeks is very much with us today, in the form of
terrorists, serial killers, riots, pogroms, and aggressive
tinhorn dictators who turn out to be military incompetents.
And yet for all their stupidity and incompetence, people
like that can conquer and control large chunks of the world
  if they are not resisted....

Who is going to fight them off, Randy?

[...] If Ares-worshippers aren't going to end up running
the whole world, someone needs to do violence to them.
This isn't very nice, but it's a fact: civilization
requires an Aegis. And the only way to fight the
bastards off in the end is through intelligence.
  Cunning. Metis.

The above quote is, to a certain extent, responsible for the anti-system and revolutionary talk in this book. I want to make sure that the next generation is well armed with information and analytical skills that they will need to change the system. The changing information landscape and the democratization of education will soon make it possible to finally f*** the sytem. Modern warfare is information warfare.

I am strongly against the appropriation of the wealth of the rich people through any form of “revolution”. The problem is that not all rich people are bad guys. Some people became rich by legitimate means. So while it would be right to “nationalize” the wealth of an some business which obtained what it has by bribe, it would not be right to take away the wealth of the self-made shop owner who worked all his life to build his empire of shops.

Let the rich keep what they own now. We are creating a new economy and we just need to own the new economy. Because everywthign grows exp. within a couple of gen. we will have everything back again.
